Document ID: c01200826 Version: 2 ProLiant Servers Running The iLO Advanced And Enhanced System Management Controller Driver (CPQASM2.SYS) May Stop Responding During An Upgrade From Windows 2000 To Windows Server 2003 NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice. Release Date: 2005-03-17 Last Updated: 2005-03-17 DESCRIPTION During an upgrade from Microsoft Windows 2000 (any edition) to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (any edition), ProLiant servers running the iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver (CPQASM2.SYS) may stop responding when the system has 34 minutes or less remaining in the upgrade process. This is caused by Windows stopping and restarting this driver during the upgrade. If version 5.33.2195.0 (or earlier) of the CPQASM2.SYS driver is installed, the following Authenticode security alert will be displayed: Security Alert Driver Installation The driver software you are installing for HP ProLiant iLO Advanced Systems Management Controller has not been properly signed with Authenticode (tm) technology. Therefore, windows cannot tell if the software has been modified since it was published...... Do you still want to install this driver software? Yes or No If "Yes" is entered to install the driver, the system may stop responding. The Authenticode security alert occurs because the Windows 2000 version of the iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver (CPQASM2.SYS) is digitally signed for Windows 2000 only. If version 5.35.0.0 of the CPQASM2.SYS driver is installed, the Authenticode security alert will not be displayed, since this version of the driver is signed for both Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. SCOPE Any of the following ProLiant servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and receiving an upgrade to any edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 while running the iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver: * ProLiant BL20p Server Blade * ProLiant BL20p G2 Server Blade * ProLiant BL20p G3 Server Blade * ProLiant BL25p Server Blade * ProLiant BL30p Server Blade * ProLiant BL35p Server Blade * ProLiant BL40p Server Blade * ProLiant DL380 G3 * ProLiant DL380 G4 * ProLiant DL360 G2 * ProLiant DL360 G3 * ProLiant DL360 G4 * ProLiant DL560 * ProLiant DL580 G2 * ProLiant DL585 * ProLiant DL740 * ProLiant ML350 G4 * ProLiant ML370 G3 * ProLiant ML370 G4 RESOLUTION If version 5.33.2195.0 of the CPQASM2.SYS driver is installed, as a workaround, enter "No" when the Authenticode security alert prompts to install the driver. The installation will complete and the system may require a manual reboot. The iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003 can then be installed. The iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver (CPQASM2.SYS) for Windows 2000/Server 2003 Version 5.35.0.0 is available for download as Smart Component CP005003 at the following URL and contains a digital signature for Windows 2003: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/21871.html If "Yes" was entered when the Authenticode security alert is displayed and the server stopped responding during the driver installation, power-cycle the server and respond with "No" when the Authenticode warning is displayed. The upgrade process will begin at the point at which it previously stopped and will complete successfully. If version 5.35.0.0 of the CPQASM2.SYS driver is installed, it must be disabled before starting the upgrade process. It is possible to temporarily disable the iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver prior to performing the upgrade to Windows Server 2003 by renaming CPQASM2.SYS (CPQASM2.SYS is located in the \SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory) to another filename (e.g., CPQASM2.BAK) and rebooting the server (it is not necessary to go into Safe Mode first). Several messages will be logged to the Windows Event Log from the Insight Manager Agents, etc. indicating that a handle to the driver cannot be opened. These messages are informational only and can be safely ignored. After the upgrade is complete, the iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003 can then be installed If version 5.35.0.0 of the CPQASM2.SYS driver was running prior to the upgrade, Recovery Console must be used to recover the server by deleting the CPQASM2.SYS file. Recover the server by performing the following steps: 1. Reboot the system. 2. Press a key when prompted to boot from the Windows installation CD. The following message will be displayed: This computer is already in the process of being upgraded to Microsoft Windows. What do you want to do? - To continue the current upgrade, press ENTER. - To cancel the current upgrade and install new version of Microsoft Windows, press F10 - To exit Setup without installing Microsoft Windows, press F3. 3. Press F10 to restart text-mode setup. (This will not cancel the upgrade unless the process proceeds to the point where the hard drive is partitioned, formatted, and files are copied to it.) Text-mode setup will begin and will display the following message: This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft (R) Windows (R) to run on your computer. - To set up Windows now, press ENTER. - To repair a Windows installation using Recovery Console, press R. - To quit Setup without installing Windows, press F3. 4. Press R to launch Recovery Console. 5. Log into the Windows installation that is being upgraded. 6. Delete the CPQASM2.SYS file from the SYSTEM32\DRIVERS subdirectory of the Windows installation. 7. Exit from Recovery Console using the "exit" command. (This will reboot the system, and Windows Setup will resume the graphics-mode portion of the upgrade process. The upgrade will complete normally.) 8. After the upgrade is complete, reinstall version 5.35.0.0 of the CPQASM2.SYS driver. Note: The iLO Advanced and Enhanced System Management Controller Driver is NOT susceptible to the condition documented in Customer Advisory EM041013_CW01 (Attempting To Disable The HP ProLiant Advanced System Management Controller Driver May Cause A ProLiant Server To Stop Responding During Reboot Operation). EM041013_CW01 is available at the following URL: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport..._EM041013_CW01 This behavior will not occur with CPQASM2.SYS Version 5.36.0.0 currently scheduled to become available in SmartStart Release 7.30.
