"The successor to Windows NT® Embedded 4.0, Windows XP Embedded is the componentized version of Windows XP Professional, enabling rapid development of the most reliable and full-featured devices. Based on the same binaries as Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded enables developers to select only the features they need for customized, reduced footprint embedded devices. For more details about Windows XP Embedded"
"Windows Embedded is a family of operating system software from Microsoft for use in non-personal computer devices like cash registers, automated teller machines (ATMs), industrial controllers, server appliances, advanced consumer electronics, and specialized handheld devices. The Microsoft family of embedded operating systems is based on Windows technologies and consists of Windows CE .NET, Windows XP Embedded, and Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit. "

Windows Embedded Studio
Component Database
Target Designer
Platform-specific Tools
"Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio is a set of development tools that are used to create a custom Windows XP Embedded image, based on the requirements of embedded system hardware and software.
In order to achieve a highly granular level of customization,
Windows XP Embedded is broken down into clearly defined units of functionality called components. There are over 10,000 components included in Windows XP Embedded.
These components may describe a simple feature, such as Notepad.exe or a larger and more complex feature, such as Internet Explorer.
Because Windows XP Embedded is based on the same binaries as Microsoft Windows XP Professional, the feature components included in Windows XP Embedded correspond exactly to the features in Windows XP Professional. While there is no difference in the binary code, the Windows XP Embedded feature components also include data that is necessary to enable the embedded developer to mix and match feature components and build a customized operating system run-time image to meet the requirements of their specific embedded scenario."
